Associate Producer, Lagniappe

Catherine Calhoun is a sophomore Spanish Major and Communications Minor at the University of Louisiana Monroe, and plans on being a translator when she graduates.

Originally from West Monroe, she lives on campus for her first time "away" from home.

Catherine is very involved in the Wesley Foundation on campus and is part of the Warhawk Tennis Club. When not on campus, she volunteers at Foundry on Sunday mornings as part of the Foundry Kids team and teardown crew.

Catherine enjoys Disney movies, kayaking, and writing.

Thursday July 20th, the Biedenharn Museum and Gardens will be holding it's annual summer event, Moonlight in the Gardens. July's Moonlight will feature Jazz, the Bible Museum, the Coke Museum and Store, a look into the gardens, and the always popular Coke Floats. Moonlight will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Ralph Calhoun, director of the museum, shares that, "Guest get the opportunity to see the gardens, literally, in a different light." Moonlight in the Gardens is one of the only opportunities visitors have to see the gardens at night.

Tuesday July 18, the Walk to End Alzheimer's is holding a team recruitment party at 6:30 p.m. at Azalea Estates Assisted Living for people interested in helping with the walk in November. 

The Walk to End Alzheimer's will be held November 4. This organization raises awareness about Alzheimer's as well as funds to find a cure to this disease. Alzheimer's is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States, and an estimated 85,000 people are diagnosed with this disease in Louisiana alone.

Monday July 17th, at the West Monroe Library Branch, the Living Well Foundation will be holding interest meetings for its next grant cycle at 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. These meeting will show local organizations what a Living Well grant can do and who is eligible to receive them.

Shannon Rider from Ouachita Parish Mosquito Abatement shares information on the different types of mosquitoes in our area and how to steer clear of bites this mosquito season.

When trying to avoid mosquitoes, it is important to take action. Shannon shares that wearing longer sleeves, lighter colors, EPA approved repellant, and avoiding scented lotions and perfumes can all help keep the mosquitoes away. Making sure that there is no standing water around you house in buckets or other containers can also help reduce the amount of mosquitoes around your house.

Thursday July 20th, KEDM and Tonore's Wine Cellar are hosting a Craft Festiv-ALE beer tasting from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Tonore's for a twenty dollar donation to KEDM.

This craft beer tasting will include local, national, and imported brands. Russell Kicey, owner of Tonore's, shares that there will be beers that guest are familiar with and some they may have never heard of before. There will be appetizers served along with the beers.

The Hampstead Stage Company

The Ouachita Parish Public Library will be hosting the Hampstead Stage Company’s performances of Pinocchio Monday, June 26th. There will be one performance at the Ouachita Valley Branch in West Monroe at 10:30 a.m., and another performance at 2:00 p.m. at the Main Branch in Monroe.

Starr Homeplace's Community Day is coming up Saturday June 10th, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Community Day is held once a month to help gather together the creative people of the region and share different skills.

Saturday June 17th, the Black Bayou Lake National Wildlife Refuge is celebrating its 20th anniversary at the refuge. The celebration will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. with interactive activities for children and adults.

Black Bayou became a refuge in 1997 and has been serving the community by providing a scenic place for families to enjoy the wildlife and learn about Louisiana's biodiversity. The refuge has 5,000 acres of wildlife including 2,500 acres of lake. Visitors can walk the trails, go hunting or fishing, and admire the wildflower fields at the refuge.

The Louisiana Opera is presenting one of the classic American operas, 'Susannah', Friday June 9th and Sunday June 11th. The opera will be held at the Biedenharn Recital Hall on campus at the University of Louisiana Monroe at 7:30 p.m. on Friday night and 2:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
