Associate Producer, Lagniappe

Catherine Calhoun is a freshman Spanish Major and Communications Minor at the University of Louisiana Monroe, and plans on being a translator when she graduates.

Originally from West Monroe, she moved on campus for her first year "away" from home.

Catherine is very involved in the Wesley Foundation on campus. When not on campus, she volunteers at Foundry on Sunday mornings as part of the Foundry Kids team and teardown crew.

Catherine enjoys Disney movies, kayaking, and writing.

Saturday April 15th, the Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo will be holding its Easter Eggstravaganza. Gates open at 10:00 a.m. that morning, and the Easter egg hunts start at 11:00 a.m.

The Easter Eggstravaganza is one of the zoo's biggest events of the year. Director of the zoo, Joe Clawson, shares that, "The event is to raise money, but it is also to share with the community what's been going on at the zoo. We're really proud of what the staff has accomplished."

Saturday April 29th, the Northeast American Red Cross will celebrate its 100th anniversary with its 20th annual Red Cross Bash. This event will be held from 7:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. at The Monroe Regional Airport Hangar 9.

Thursday April 20th, the University of Louisiana Monroe Alumni Association holds its signature event, Wine Over Water. The main event will be held at the ULM Bridge from 7 to 10 p.m.

Wine Over Water is the largest fundraiser the ULM Alumni Association holds during the year. This event raises money for the Spirit of The Warhawk Scholarship. The Spirit of the Warhawk Scholarship helps reduce the costs of attending ULM for local students.

This Saturday, April 15th Black Bayou Lake National Wildlife Refuge is combining Earth Day, Migratory Bird Day, and Tax Day into one Spring Celebration. The Celebration will be held from 10: 00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the refuge.

The celebration will include an egg hunt, the turning of the blue goose, a ribbon cutting, a paddle board demonstrations by H2GO, and many fun activities for kids. Dale Barry will be there as a special guest with his hawk, Delhi along with the Forestry Club from Louisiana Tech University.

Tuesday, April 11th Dr. John Carr will be holding a presentation and book signing event for his recent book "Amphibians and Reptiles of Louisiana". The presentation will begin at 5:30 p.m. on campus at the University of Louisiana Monroe in Hanna Hall room 250.

Dr. Carr and Dr. Boundy's book, a project three and a half years in the making, is a comprehensive field guide to Louisiana's native and invasive amphibians and reptiles. The guide includes 140 native species, 8 invasive species, and multiple illustrations of each species included.

Saturday, April 8th the Northeast Louisiana Master Gardeners Association is holding its annual spring plant sale, Spring Fest. The sale, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and pre sale, Friday 12 p.m. to 6 p.m., will be held at the West Monroe Farmer's Market under the water tower.

John Stringer talks to Cory Crowe about the potential for budget cuts concerning the Ouachita River. He shares the risks associated with lower funding, why the river is important to the area, and sheds light on organizations that are trying to help.

Mr. Stringer shares that if action is not taken, "we'll have a meandering stream going through sandbars" where we once had the Ouachita.

Thursday, April 6th, the Downtown Gallery Crawl will be held from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. This month's crawl will take place throughout Monroe and West Monroe in 10 different galleries. 

As always, the Downtown Gallery Crawl is a place to find art, food, music, and drinks. The crawl is held by the Downtown Arts Alliance to add culture to the region and give artists and art lovers alike a place to display and enjoy art. This crawl will have old and new elements to keep the creativity flowing.

This weekend, April 6th through the 9th, West Monroe High School's Drama Department will be presenting its spring musical, Little Shop of Horrors. The musical will be held at West Monroe High School's Auditorium.

The musical Little Shop of Horrors follows the story of a mysterious alien disguised as a plant that popped up one day in the New York area. The plant grows throughout the play, and as the play progresses, main character Seymour, realizes the plant's need for human blood. Lucky for the plant, there is a dentist who no one in the cast would miss.

Saturday, April 8th, the University of Louisiana Monroe's Wesley Foundation is holding its fifth annual Golf Tournament fundraiser at Black Bear Golf Course in Delhi. Lunch will be provided at 11:30 a.m. and the tournament will begin at 1 p.m. 

The Golf Tournament will include competitions for longest drive and closest to the pin along with prizes for first and second place teams. There will also have mulligans for sale as part of 'mulligans for missions'. The money earned from this mulligans will go directly to support student mission trips.
