Catherine Calhoun

Associate Producer, Lagniappe

Catherine Calhoun is a junior Spanish Major and Communications Minor at the University of Louisiana Monroe, and plans on being a translator when she graduates.

Originally from West Monroe, she lives on campus for her first time "away" from home.

Catherine is very involved in the Wesley Foundation on campus and is part of the Warhawk Tennis Club. When not on campus, she volunteers at Foundry on Sunday mornings as part of the Foundry Kids team and teardown crew.

Catherine enjoys Disney movies, kayaking, and writing.

The Downtown Gallery Crawl will continue celebrating its 10th anniversary Thursday, December 7, with its December Gallery Crawl. The Crawl will be from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. across Downtown Monroe and West Monroe.

The annual Holiday Art Sale on campus at the University of Louisiana Monroe will be taking place December 4-8. The sale will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Holiday Art Sale will feature work from students and faculty at the university. There will be all sorts of artworks and styles displayed such as paintings, photography, prints, sculptures, pottery, and even candles and soaps. Brooke Foy, art professor at ULM, encourages guest to plan to come early in the week. She shares,   "After Wednesday a lot of the great Christmas presents will have been grabbed."

The Strauss Theatre Center is ringing in the holiday season with its twist on the classic Christmas story, Miracle on 34th Street. This musical will open Friday, December 8, and will run through December 15. Showtimes will be at 7 p.m. on the 8th, 12th, 14th, and 15th, and there will be a 2 p.m. matinee on the 10th.

Chapter 51 of the Disabled American Veterans has started a shuttle service to bring disabled veterans to the VA Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi. 

The mission of the Disabled American Veterans is to empower veterans to live a a high quality life with respect and dignity. General Claire Chennault shares that, "It is our responsibility to work with veterans to give them the benefits they rightfully deserve." This shuttle service is one way that the Disabled Americans Veterans are ensuring that veterans are being taken care of.

Subaru's Leave No Trace Traveling Trainings have made their way to Louisiana to help promote outdoor ethics and safe interactions with wildlife. The trainers, Amanda Jameson and Junaid Dawad, will be at the Black Bayou Wildlife Refuge on Friday, November 17, at 6:30 p.m. and Saturday, November 18, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

The Center for Children and Families is encouraging community members to volunteer to be a CASA for a child in the foster care program.   A CASA, or Court Appointed Special Advocate, advocates for a child in need by being a steady presence in the child's life.

The Wellspring Alliance of NELA and the NELA Food Bank are teaming up to take a new approach on raising awareness about homelessness. Friday, January 19, the Wellspring will be hosting Cardboard Box City from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. the next day at First United Methodist Church Monroe.

The Louisiana Trust for Historic Preservation is coming alongside the Cooley House Foundation to be a part of the Cooley House Lecture Series. The lecture will be held Thursday, November 4, and will begin at 6 p.m. at the Ouachita Grand Plaza. There will be a free tour of the Cooley House available from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. before the lecture begins.

The time has come for the annual Southern Living Holiday Cookbook to return to Dillard's. The cookbook will be sold for only ten dollars, and it is filled with holiday and year round recipes.  

As always the proceeds from this cookbook go to help fund the Ronald McDonald House in Monroe. Monroe's house has been serving families since November 1985, and is the smallest community to have a Ronald McDonald House.
