Catherine Calhoun

Associate Producer, Lagniappe

Catherine Calhoun is a sophomore Spanish Major and Communications Minor at the University of Louisiana Monroe, and plans on being a translator when she graduates.

Originally from West Monroe, she lives on campus for her first time "away" from home.

Catherine is very involved in the Wesley Foundation on campus and is part of the Warhawk Tennis Club. When not on campus, she volunteers at Foundry on Sunday mornings as part of the Foundry Kids team and teardown crew.

Catherine enjoys Disney movies, kayaking, and writing.

Saturday, November 12th is America Recycles Day. Ouachita Green will be accepting donations at the Monroe Civic Center from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. 

America Recycles Day is a way to get communities and families thinking about and participating in recycling.

The Biedenharn Museum and Gardens is hosting the Great American Songbook in concert Saturday, November 4th at 7 p.m. The concert will feature Cory Trahan, Lisa Lee Phifer, and Richard Seiler, a local trio of ten years.

This Saturday's concert will be held to honor Tommy Usrey's retirement as President of the Northeast Louisiana's Arts Council. The trio will be performing some of their favorite American classics from Broadway and jazz to pop repertoire. 

River Cities Jubilee Chorus Facebook

Saturday, November 5th,  A Cappella Fever will be at Dixie Theatre at 7 p.m. This concert will include rock and roll, gospel, comedy, and classic barber shop style music. A Cappella Fever features the Bayou Blend Quartet, Rhapsody!, River Cities Jubilee Chorus, and the Piney Hills Harmony Chorus.

This concert, presented by the Duck Commander Company, will be benefiting the non profit organization, MedCamps of Louisiana.

The Visual and Performing Arts program at the University of Louisiana at Monroe's opening night of Sweeney Todd is Thursday October 28th at 7:30 P.M.  The play will be shown Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night.

The Dixie Center in Ruston will be holding the concert, Piano Virtuosos, with Stephanie Trick and her husband Paolo Alderighi this Thursday, October 27th at 7 P.M. 

Stephanie and Paolo perform stride, a style of jazz piano playing in which the right hand plays the melody while the left hand plays a single bass note or octave on the strong beat and a chord on the weak beat. This unique style of music originated in the 1920's, and is often not played anymore. Stride allows a single artist or pair of artists to create the sounds of a whole orchestra. 

Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo

Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo is hosting its annual Halloween event, Boo at the Zoo, Saturday, October 29th from 10 a.m.to 3 p.m. This year's theme, PokeMonKEE, is all things Pokemon and monkeys.

Boo at the Zoo will be a full day of fun with costume contests, prizes, photo opportunities, and a magician. The zoo will also be giving one of their lions, Baja, a new boomer ball (an indestructible ball made for wild cats).

The University of Louisiana at Monroe hosts the Traveling Scholar Series on October 25th at 6 P.M. Dr. Amanda Martinez will be doing a lecture on the relationship between comedy and racial stereotypes.

West Monroe Downtown Revitalization Group

Downtown West Monroe will be hosting the Pumpkin Fest this Saturday Oct. 29th to benefit the Debbie Bourg Dancers, and a Wild Wild West Fundraiser Night to benefit the Downtown West Monroe Revitalization Group. The Pumpkin Fest will take place from 10 A.M. to 4 P.M. on Commerce Street. and the Wild Wild West Night will take place from 7 P.M. to 11 P.M. on Trenton Street.

The Pumpkin Fest will have vendors, booths, a pumpkin patch, a hay ride, crafts, costume contests (for kids and pets!), and live entertainment. Debbie Bourg's dancers will start dancing at noon.

The University of Louisiana at Monroe's School of Pharmacy is partnering with the Children's Coalition to help promote the National Prescription Drug Take Back Day this Saturday. 

Super One in West Monroe and Bastrop, Brookshire's in Farmerville, and the Troop F Office in Monroe will all be collecting unused and expired prescription medicine on October 29th from 10 A.M. to 2 P.M.
