Abita Springs is going green.
Abita Springs officials have pledged the community will be energy efficient by 2030. The town council voted this week to transition to 100 percent clean and renewable energy – wind and solar -- the first in Louisiana to make such a pledge, 24th city in the country.
Sierra Club spokesman Shane Levy says it makes financial sense.
“For a town to know what the energy costs are going to be 20 years from now because clean energy is so affordable and so stable, that means that Abita Springs can plan ahead to invest in areas like infrastructure, schools, roads and bridges and not have to worry about the cost of energy.”
Levy says officials will now begin planning how that transition to solar and wind power will take place.
