Art Exhibit Shares the Story of an Era

Clementine Hunter was a completely self taught artist.

The Snyder Museum in Bastrop has a special exhibit of artwork from a private collection by the famous artist Clementine Hunter.

Hunter grew up in the Natchitoches area of Louisiana in the late 1800's as the grandchild of a slave. Though the art is juvenile, Hunter's art  is valued because it shares a story of the era she grew up in, which is not often seen. Hunter learned from the artists that pasted through her home on Melrose Plantation. Her paintings, which can be sold for more than $4,000, were on display for 25 cents when she was still alive.

The exhibit is available to be seen Tuesday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. or by private appointment by calling (318) 281-8760. More information can be found here.
