City Council Candidates Participate in Public Forum

Garden District Neighborhood Alliance

Choosing the best representative in local government can be a daunting task. A public forum with candidates can help identify where they all stand on the important issues. This is the goal of the Garden District Neighborhood Alliance according to Robert Eisenstadt and Kara Platt.

The Alliance is hosting a public forum including all of the candidates from Districts 1 and 3 of the Monroe City Council. The event is Thursday, February 18 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in Kilbourne Hall at Grace Episcopal Church.

“What’s great about this forum is that all of the candidates have confirmed their attendance,” says Flatt.

Bob Lenox will moderate the event, which will differ from the debate format most often seen by voters. Each candidate will have a five minute introduction followed by written questions from the audience – each candidate will have 3 minutes to respond. Candidate will not be allowed to comment beyond that point.

According to Eisenstadt, this gives voters a unique understanding of each candidates own views, and not merely their response to their opponent’s statements.

“These people actually play a serious role in governance. This is the voice that you have in your city government,” urges Eisenstadt. City Council members are elected to a 4 year term, and help decide on a number of important issues including zoning laws and taxes.

Running for District 1 are Jay Marx and Michael Echols. District 3 candidates are Betty Blake, Juanita Woods, and Ernest Mohammed.
