Contract Ordinance Seeks Contribution Disclosure

Monroe City Council Chairman Ray Armstrong plans to bring a controversial measure back before the council next week.

The revised ordinance seeks to require council approval of all professional contracts with the city of over $15,000 in a year.  The item now includes a requirement of those businesses contracting with the city to disclose political contributions made to any elected official of the city or any business relationship with that individual.

The original proposal, introduced in January, only called for approval of contracts of $5,000 with the city.  It was amended to raise the amount to $10,000.  The contribution disclosure is new to the measure. Armstrong says he included the item to ensure transparency and accountability.

Monroe Mayor Jamie Mayo was against the original ordinance, and maintains his opposition to the revised proposal.  He says the contributions item is unnecessary as a contributions are already a matter of public record, as they can be found on the Secretary of State's website.
