Emergency Destruction For Some Explosives At Camp Minden

press herald

A storage leak in one of the 97 igloos containing M6 propellant at Camp Minden has resulted in a recommendation for emergency destruction of its contents.

Officials are concerned that moisture build up could cause a chemical reaction that would cause the M6 to ignite.  Minden Representative Gene Reynolds says the contents would be moved for destruction.  "They (Enivironmental Protection Agency) would take it off site for disposal," he said.

The Louisiana National Guard continues to review bids for the nearly 16 million pounds of artillery propellant located at the camp.  Reynolds says he expects a decision on the disposal method to be announced within the next few days.
