Esman: Incarceration A Key Issue For Next Governor

towntalk.com

The American Civil Liberties Union is calling on the candidates for Governor to address the state's incarceration issue.

ACLU Louisiana Executive Director Marjorie Esman  says gubernatorial candidates are honed in on the budget and education, when the conversation needs to be about how the state can save money.  "A huge amount of money is spent incarcerating our people.  It's probably the largest in the world," said Esman.

She adds that the state wastes millions of taxpayer money by placing people in jail who pose little threat to society.  She hopes the candidates will look at alternatives to incarceration for those convicted of lesser offenses.
