Masur Welcomes New Artist-in-Residence, Celebrates 53rd Juried Competition

The very first exhibit at the Masur Museum was a juried competition.

The Masur Museum of Art welcomes its newest artist-in-residence, Beili Liu, on Tuesday June 14, and hosts a reception for the 53rd Annual Juried Competition on Saturday June 25. Summer art camps are also in full swing.

"Every two years or so we choose an artist that doesn't have anything to do with Louisiana. We bring them in to experience Monroe, our culture, and our community, and create artwork that relates to their experiences while here," says Executive Director Evelyn Stewart.

Beili Liu teaches art at the University of Texas in Austin, and will get introduced to Monroe at a Cultural Exchange Panel on June 14. She will continue her immersion into north Louisiana's unique culture and start working on her exhibition slotted to premier in November.

The Juried Competition is a widely anticipated showing each year, and has grown from a small local contest to a nationwide competition garnering over 1,000 entries. The reception on the 25 was originally planned for the spring, but has been rescheduled due to the flood.

"People always love the Juried Competition," says Museum Curator Ben Hickey, "It's like a mix tape of contemporary art from all across the United States."

The Masur is also hosting its summer arts camps, and this year sees the addition of both a preschool day camp and teen workshops.

For more information, including a full calendar of museum events visit the Masur's Facebook page, or the museum's website.
