The Museum of East Texas in Lufkin will host a panel discussion Sunday about the women’s suffrage movement in Texas.
Three East Texas women, who have dedicated their livelihood to women’s issues, will guide the discussion.
Ellen Temple is a retired publisher and educator. In the 1980s, she published the first two books in print about the women’s right to vote in Texas.
“I think it’s an exciting story. It enfranchised half of the population without wars, in a peaceful way. It belongs right up there in our consciousness with the story of the battle of The Alamo and the battle of San Jacinto,” Temple said.
Temple notes some women organized against the 19th Amendment. She compares it to recent times when some women helped defeat an Equal Rights Amendment.
The discussion titled “Texas Women Win the Vote” is from 2:30 – 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 14, and also features Rev. Bettie Kennedy and writer Kay Arnold.Woman's suffrage piece
