OPSO Warns of Cash Card Scam

OPSO SCAM

The Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s Office has received reports from parish residents of a scam currently working in Ouachita Parish.  The residents received a call from someone identifying themselves as calling from the Sheriff’s Office, saying the resident has missed jury duty and have to pay a fine.  The caller will usually have a strong language accent.  The resident is instructed to buy a Green Dot Cash card and then given a specific phone number to dial with the card information.  When the number is dialed and the information given, the cash transfers to the scammers.  Normally, the money goes immediately out of the country. This is another version of a scam that has operated in the U.S. for some time.  The Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s Office never calls residents by phone asking residents to buy a Green Dot card to pay a fine to avoid jail or any other monetary transaction.  Should you receive a call of this nature, notify your local law enforcement agency.
