Robotic Arm Lends Precision To Surgeries at Local Hospital

A group of local surgeons are using a new state of the art robot for orthopedic surgery.

The RIO Robotic Arm is used for knee and hip surgery at P & S Surgical Hospital in Monroe.

Doctors can now use a CT scan of a patient to create a 3-D image of the surgical site, essentially making a plan for the surgery before the first cut is made.  Computer enhanced surgery methods have been used for the past decade.  Doctors say the new technology is the next step in increasing accuracy.

Surgeons  can use the information to assist the surgery, making very precise cuts to allow them to put specific implants and recreate patient anatomy for both the hip and knee.
