More than 200 people attended a Christmas program in Central City hosted by a ministry for children whose mothers are incarcerated.

The Mountain Climbers Ministry hosted its fifth annual Joy to the World party yesterday for the children of about 50 women now incarcerated in the Orleans Parish jail. Its name suggests the perceptions of mountains that can be challenges in life – for children and their families.

Mountain Climbers spokeswoman Deborah Chapman Kareem:

“Even though their mother is not with them, they still miss their mothers. And also, we’re planning something for their caregivers because it’s overwhelming for them. They need help and supportive services because they’re caring for children in addition to other relatives. There might be a father that’s not present.”  she said.

Councilwoman LaToya Cantrell helped the ministry and sponsors organize the event that she says helps the whole community.

“We’re coming together really in the spirit of empathy and love, and real gratitude and appreciation in showing them that they’re cared about and we want to build people up. It’s not a hand out. It’s a way to build them up. – build their spirits up because we all need that,” Cantrell said.

Children submitted their wish lists – many choosing clothing over toys. Kareem says they all leave with a framed picture with Santa.
