Carols and Holiday Cheer with MSO

The Monroe Symphony Orchestra performs it's holiday "Sounds Of The Seasons" concert Sunday at the West Monroe Convention Center.  Festivities begin at 2 p.m. with pianist Julian Jones performing holiday favorites in the center's lobby.  MSO President of the Board of Governors Charles Jackson says this year's event features traditional and secular pieces, and the Monroe Symphony Chorus joining the celebration in a collection of sing-along carols with the audience.

The Biedenharn Museum is filled with holiday decorations.  Each year, the Monroe Garden Study League brings a unique look to the rooms that fill the site.  Biedenharn Executive Director Ralph Calhoun says this year's theme is "O Christmas Tree".  "The ladies with the league have wonderfully decorated 14 trees in the Fountain Room," Calhoun said.  "It's like you've never walked indoors."

The Music Man Marches Onto Strauss Stage

There's trouble in River City when a fast-talking salesman cons the townspeople into creating a boys' band.  Scott Zentner, in the role of Harold Hill, begins to question himself after getting to know Marian, the librarian, played by Claire Vangelisti.  Performances begin Thursday night, December 11th, at the Strauss Theatre Center in Monroe.

Many people associate the work of Goodwill Industries with the familiar donation store.  Most are unaware of other community assistance programs the organization provides.  A youth mentor program helps at-risk and foster children in education and employment pursuits.

Goodwill Support Employment Manager Josh Tolleson says the program covers basic life skills and education assistance for those planning to take the HiSET exam, formerly known as GED.  It also provides job readiness training and job placement. 

A Mix of Art and Music for the Holidays

Eleven galleries welcome guests Thursday night for a holiday art crawl in downtown Monroe and West Monroe.  The evening features artist talks and live music at several venues as part of the celebration.  "It's a variety of holiday art, from paintings to sculpture, even jewelry" says Downtown Arts Alliance Communications Consultant Ann Bloxom Smith.
