35 future State Police cadets will graduate as part of the 97th Louisiana State Police Cadet class today. Sgt. Jared Sandifer says the class was one of the smaller ones in recent memory. They started with 49, but it’s still a very good success rate with 71 percent of the class graduating.

Sandifer says, "That is a very good number. That's going to be thirty five more state troopers keeping the citizens of Louisiana safe."

Starting this month, Louisiana State Police will be adding Dodge Chargers to their fleet with a twist.  Some of the new vehicles will be fully marked, while others will be semi-marked and a few will not be marked at all.  State Police Lt. J.B. Slaton says the new less visible vehicles will allow Troopers to blend in with traffic and stop drivers who are reckless.

State Police have used a uniform logo up to this time.  Slaton says using a “ghost logo” will help them blend in better which hopefully translates to safer driving.

An unrestrained man lost his life this morning after the vehicle he was driving traveled off the road and began to overturn.

Shortly after 5:30 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop F responded to a single-vehicle crash on LA Hwy 596 just north of Lake Providence. The preliminary investigation revealed a 1999 Lexus SUV, driven by 65-year-old Willie Williams of Lake Providence, was traveling north on LA Hwy 596 when the vehicle traveled off the right side of the road. Williams then overcorrected his vehicle, traveled across both lanes, entered a ditch, and began overturning.

SHREVEPORT, La. – Acting U.S. Attorney Alexander C. Van Hook announced that a Texas man was sentenced last week to 240 months in prison for conspiring to transport methamphetamine and cocaine.

State Police arrest a Slidell man after he allegedly hit a bicyclist, removed him from his windshield and left the scene.  Trooper Dustin Dwight says 48-year-old Larry Kellett struck 59-year-old Calvin Lefort Jr. of Slidell on US 190 Saturday night.

It was fairly easy to find out where Kellett went.  Dwight says all they had to do was follow a fluid trail.

After police found Kellett, Dwight says he offered a breath sample, which showed no alcohol in his system.  Dwight says they are still trying to find out why he left the scene, making more of a problem for himself.

State Police are looking for the driver of a pickup truck after a man riding in the bed of the truck, fell out and died in Winn Parish Sunday morning.   Master Trooper Scott Moreau says they believe they know the events leading up to the death of 21-year-old Hunter Thomisee of Montgomery.

Troopers are still trying to determine how Thomisee fell out and why he was in the bed of the pickup.  Moreau says while they continue the investigation, they need the public’s help to find the vehicle and it’s driver.

For the first time since 2005, two state police cadet classes will run simultaneously. Aspiring troopers have reported for the 97th cadet class with 49 individuals. The 96th class has entered their 11th week of training. Sgt. Jared Sandifer says both classes are going through an intense training program.

Sandifer says people across the state should be happy that many are still willing to join the ranks and help serve them.

Sandifer says even though there will be two different classes, the end result will be the same.
