The ride sharing service  Lyft is expected to begin operations in the Monroe area next week according to Mayor Jamie Mayo. Lyft is a service that upon request will pick you up and take you to your designated location. Rides are requested by a smartphone app.

Multiple background checks of the drivers and vehicle checks occur.

Riders must be at least age 18 or older to use the service. /

The Monroe City Council approved a ridesharing ordinance at the last council meeting. The new rules will make it easier for companies like Uber and Lyft to do business in Monroe.

KEDM reached out to both Uber and Lyft to see if ridsharing is in our future. Uber responded with the following statement from Uber Louisiana General Manager David Brightman.

Monroe is getting a little closer to allowing ride sharing. At Tuesday night's council meeting held to discuss the possibility of obtaining Uber and Lyft a crowd came out for support. The council decided to proceed with the process, not everyone in attendance was happy about the news of Uber and Lyft. Local taxi companies think it will slow their business and could be dangerous to them.
