An applicant for one of Louisiana's nine medical marijuana pharmacy permits has filed a lawsuit against the state Board of Pharmacy over its decision to pick the fourth-ranked choice for the license in the New Orleans region.  News outlets report that Rx Greenhouse is suing in Baton Rouge court seeking to have the license awarded to H&W Drug Store vacated.

The State of Louisiana is making it possible for state residents to use medical marijuana if they have a medical condition that qualifies but many pharmacist and doctors are scared to get involved. There are federal laws that prohibit prescribing marijuana and medical professionals hold federal licenses that could be at risk.

Dr. Jeffery Evans is head of Clinical Studies at the University of Louisiana Monroe School of Pharmacy says the feds could stop the Louisiana medical pot program if they wanted to.

Medical marijuana is a hot topic throughout Louisiana. This legislative session multiple bill have been presented to help get medical cannabis into the hands of Louisiana citizens who may benefit. Right now the state policies are a bit confusing and federal law says marijuana is illegal.

Southern University has signed a contract for the school's medical marijuana program with a firm struggling with its ownership structure.  

Southern said Thursday that the contract has been signed with the two biggest owners of Advanced Biomedics. The majority owner, Carrol Castille, and the founder and minority owner, Chad Bodin, have been battling in a Lafayette court for weeks. The contract was signed on assurances that the company is working to resolve the ongoing feud.

The House Health and Welfare committee is expected to hear legislation today that would allow medical marijuana to be used as a legal treatment for persons with autism. Louisiana Mothers Advocating for Medical Marijuana spokesperson Katelyn Castleberry says her two sons suffer from autism and they need better options made available for treatment.

 

Castleberry says the FDA "only approves two drugs for autism." She says that the drugs carry side effects like "seizures, tremors, and suicide."

LSU and GB Sciences Louisiana has found a location to grow medical marijuana that can be distributed to patients who have specific conditions. Director of the LSU AgCenter’s Therapeutic Cannabis Program Ashley Mullens says a 36-thousand square foot warehouse near Highland Road and Interstate 10 will house the plants.

 

The building is a former Pepsi distribution center. Mullens says they plan to complete renovations on the building in June.

LSU has taken the final step in the medical marijuana contract process, which means patients with debilitating conditions could have the drug in their hands some time next year. LSU vice president for Agriculture Dr. Bill Richardson says the agreement with the cannabis company GB Sciences is done; and he predicts they’ll be moving quickly to begin cultivation.

Arkansas lawmakers have given final legislative approval and sent to the governor a bill limiting where medical marijuana patients can smoke the drug.

 

The state Senate voted 31-1 Thursday for the bill to prohibit smoking medical marijuana anywhere tobacco smoke is banned. It also bans anyone under 21 from smoking medical marijuana, bans smoking the drug around anyone under the age of 14 or knowingly smoking the drug in the presence of a pregnant woman. It would also ban smoking medical pot in motor vehicles, aircraft or motorized watercraft.
