KEDM Public Radio began the 2017 “Give the Joy of Learning” campaign with a book drive at Lexington Elementary School.

Students, parents and the community can bring new or “like new” books to Lexington or the United Way by December 8. The books will be distributed in December to students in schools in the City of Monroe as well as Ouachita, Lincoln and Union parishes as part of the year-end “Give the Joy of Learning” fundraising campaign for KEDM.

United Way of Northeast Louisiana

Read. Learn. Succeed. from the United Way of Northeast Louisiana is a community outreach in which  volunteers from the community donate thirty minutes a week to read to second and third graders in local school systems.

Now in its third year, the reading campaign has expanded to four school districts.

"Research shows us a student who does not know how to read by the third grade is four times more likely to fail to graduate. We're confident this program offers a great return on our investment," says Michelle Saucer, program director.

A number of second, third, and fourth grade students in four school districts benefit from a volunteer reading program.

READ. LEARN. SUCCEED. is seeking volunteers for its fall session.  United Way Community Impact Director Michelle Saucer says the program continues to grow.  "Last year, we had 428 volunteers reading with 213 students in the districts of Monroe City, Ouachita, Lincoln, and Morehouse Parish."
