Monroe's Southside Economic Development District (SEDD) is in the planning phase to lure a casino to the Ouachita River in Monroe. Monroe lawmaker Marcus Hunter  has indicated he will  introduce a bill to make the Ouachita River eligible to house a riverboat casino.  Numerous reports say the  DiamondJacks Casino in Bossier is a likely target.  If SEDD is courting DiamondJacks it better hurry and put a ring on it because Robert is also calling on the casino and is much closer to sealing the deal.

Less than three months after Union Parish was carved from Ouachita as a new political entity, William McKay died there intestate leaving a grieving widow and two-year old daughter.  In 1839, Union Parish was essentially wilderness and sparsely populated, the surge of immigration by settlers from eastern states just over the horizon.  McKay owned a store on the Ouachita River, either at what would later be called Alabama Landing or farther south at Ouachita City, or maybe even at the mouth of Bayou de l'Outre.

Shortly after 5:30 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop F responded to a single-vehicle crash on LA Hwy 596 just north of Lake Providence. The preliminary investigation revealed a 1999 Lexus SUV, driven by 65-year-old Willie Williams of Lake Providence, was traveling north on LA Hwy 596 when the vehicle traveled off the right side of the road. Williams then overcorrected his vehicle, traveled across both lanes, entered a ditch, and began overturning.

Louisiana's bayous and rivers have long been considered blessings and banes, depending on one's preferred mode of transportation.  In a land laced with aquatic arteries, streams were the only practical means of conveyance for centuries.  Only when colonial authorities began planning a system of roads to facilitate European settlement and economic development did the waterways become appreciated as substantial barriers to progress.
