The U.S. Department of Agriculture reminds holiday chefs to be conscious of food safety. Sarah Lichtman with the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service says the first step is cleaning your hands and surfaces before and after touching raw meats. She says the next step is to separate.

About 128-thousand people are hospitalized each year as a result of foodborne illness. Lichtman says it’s also important to make sure you cook your turkey to 165 degrees Fahrenheit. She debunks the common myth that the before cooking your turkey it needs to be washed in the sink.

Louisiana's Mosquito Season

Shannon Rider from Ouachita Parish Mosquito Abatement shares information on the different types of mosquitoes in our area and how to steer clear of bites this mosquito season.

When trying to avoid mosquitoes, it is important to take action. Shannon shares that wearing longer sleeves, lighter colors, EPA approved repellant, and avoiding scented lotions and perfumes can all help keep the mosquitoes away. Making sure that there is no standing water around you house in buckets or other containers can also help reduce the amount of mosquitoes around your house.

The West Monroe Police Department joins the National “Click-It or Ticket” Campaign for the Month of May 2017. The campaign which is being funded by the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission will focus on sobriety and occupant protection laws every Monday through Friday in the month of May. 


The checkpoints will be conducted as follows:


• Thursday, April 27, 2017: 10:00 am to 3:00 pm (Occupant Protection)

• Friday, May 5, 2017:7:00 pm to 1:00 am (Sobriety and Occupant Protection)
