OPSO issues additional scam warnings

Authorities in Ouachita Parish are once again warning residents to beware of a phone scam involving fake claims about missed jury duty and fraudulent payment demands.

According to the Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s Office, callers posing as law enforcement or court officials are contacting individuals and falsely claiming they missed jury duty or have an outstanding subpoena. The scammers then demand payment — often via Bitcoin or prepaid debit cards such as Green Dot — to avoid arrest or further legal action.

Officials emphasized that the sheriff’s office will never call residents to demand money, request payment over the phone, or solicit personal financial information.

Public Information Officer, Dpt. Amanda Lyons stated, “If you receive a suspicious call like this, hang up immediately,” the department said in a statement. “If you are unsure about the legitimacy of the call, contact us directly at (318) 329-1200.”

Residents are urged not to provide any personal or banking information over the phone. The sheriff’s office continues to investigate the scam and encourages the public to remain vigilant.

For more information or to report a scam call, contact the Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s Office at (318) 329-1200.
