An award-winning musical that addresses inter-cultural romance and post-war issues is presented this weekend at Strauss Theatre Center.
South Pacific is an old love story, but it confronts prejudices that take place in the present day. Director Corey Trahan says that he hopes the audience can relate to the show. Trahan says he hopes that the play encourages people to think.
"It was pretty controversial then, but even today it still has issues that we deal with," Trahan says.
The show includes dance and live music from the Monroe Symphony Orchestra. The orchestra's Nancy Miller says musicians will be on-stage versus being in the pit. "It'll be exciting for the actors to have the orchestra behind them. It's going to be fun for the musicians to play and interact with the cast also."
The Strauss Theatre Center received a grant from the City of Monroe for its presentation of South Pacific. The grant allows 70 patrons to view the matinee performances for free on Saturday and Sunday. Patrons must be students, senior citizens, or low-income citizens.
