The deep roots of legacy, love, and loyalty are tested in Shalanda Stanley's first novel, Drowning Is Inevitable.
A daughter tries to move out of the shadow of her deceased mother. The struggle becomes even greater as relationships with friends grow in a small Louisiana town.
""Throughout the main character's journey, she meets people who share little pieces about her mother. She finds a closeness to her mom that she didn't have early in the story," says Stanley.
It is the first novel for Stanley, an assistant professor of education at the University of Louisiana at Monroe. She wrote the book during the same time she was working on her dissertation. "I found working on the book as a reward to myself," she recalls, "I'd spend an hour or two on my studies, then pick up with the story for a while."
A book-signing is scheduled on Tuesday, September 8 at 6 p.m., in Walker Hall Room 2-105 on the ULM campus.
