Area middle and high school students get an up-close experience in learning to become a better musician this weekend.
They'll take part in the Tipitina's Foundation Sunday Youth Music Workshop at Harvey's Dance Hall in Monroe.
Event organizer Tyler Arnold says the session allows young people to develop their musical personality. "We want to nurture that unique Louisiana style of music that's known around the world," he said. "We want to pull young talent out of their comfort zone to really play what they're feeling."
The session features local bands and musicians to lead the workshop. Louisiana Soul Revival performs this Sunday.
LSR's Dan Sumner is excited to share his experience and tips with those just beginning to reach their musical stride. "This gives them a chance to be something they are trying to be," he says, "we'll put them in a position to put our band underneath them and see what they can do."
Adam Blackburn has attended previous workshops. He agrees the session gives him the chance to broaden his style of performing. "You can practice solo all day long, but if you don't have an outlet to work with others, you really can't improve. This gives you a place to work on improvising, and interpet music a bit differently."
The workshop begins at 2 p.m. It is free and open to middle and high school students. All attendees are encouraged to bring their instruments.
