Implosion Percussion performs at Louisiana Tech and the University of Louisiana Monroe this week.

With a mix of styles and talents, the Implosion Percussion Group is an group of 5 professional percussionist led by Dr. Mel Mobley. The group performs shows Louisiana Tech University Tuesday, April 5, and the University of Louisiana Monroe Thursday, April 7. Both events begin at 7:30 p.m.

Mobley is an associate professor of music at ULM, and says the group grew out of a need to help graduating student expand their horizons a little further.

"Quite a few years ago -- maybe 8 years or so ago -- I had some former students that had just graduated from ULM. They wanted a chance to play more, and they wanted to play some of the more advanced percussion literature. So we formed this little group," explains Mobley.

The percussion group is much more than just a collection of drummers. The group plays mostly more melodic percussion instruments like marimbas, and performs an eclectic mix of genres and styles. The upcoming concerts range from traditional Irish tunes all the way to ragtime.

For Implosion members, the decision to play both universities was an easy one since LA Tech Associate Music  Professor Gregory Lyons is also in the group.

"What we wanted to do was to give both communities a chance to see this event," says Mobley.

Kirby Rambin is a natural entertainer, having played violin since the age of 9 and performing publicly since he was just 12. As a teen, he performed with the Monroe Youth Symphony and the Louisiana All-State Orchestra.
