Winnsboro Easter Rock

Winnsboro Easter Rock
The Winnsboro Easter Rock is a traditional Easter Eve ritual that includes a devotional, gospel music, and the Easter Rock, featuring a circular procession with chanted spirituals and other traditional songs. Easter Rock is believed to have origins in the northeast Louisiana Delta area before the Civil War. Today only the Winnsboro group is known to practice the tradition commemorating the death and resurrection of Christ. It is led by Hattie Addison Burkhalter, who received a National Endowment for the Arts National Heritage Fellowship Award. The Rock is being held at the old church, which has been newly repaired, for the first time since 2019.
