Monroe Mayor Jamie Mayo delivered his annual State of The City address at the Monroe Civic Center Thursday. Mayo proudly announced a 2% raise for city workers. It is the fifth consecutive year workers have received a raise under his administration.
He reiterated a deliberate approach in developing a minimum wage increase. "We have to exercise patience to finding away to implement a pay scale that helps our lower wage workers, and, fairly compensate our experienced workers at the same time," said Mayo.
He highlighted improvements by public safety agencies. The fire department is set two open two facilities, while Monroe Police Chief is finalizing data and proposals for body cameras to be worn by officers.
Mayo listed a number of economic improvements in the past year. He says more development is being discussed for Monroe Regional Airport. "We are creating an Airport Master plan that involves multi-million dollar projects," he said.
Mayo listed projects and plans for the city’s south side that he feels will make the area along U.S. 165 more attractive for business. He says supporting the area’s youth is something he wants to encourage by developing a new baseball complex. He hopes that will bring greater local participation as well as attracting tournaments.
