Diwali Dhamaka, an ancient Hindu festival, celebrated the the victory of light over darkness. Heritage of India -Northeast Louisiana presents a local "festival of lights" event, Saturday at the Monroe Civic Center.
HOI President Alpa Patel says the festival has attracted celebrations all over the world. "Diwali means 'row of lighted lamps'" she explains. "During the traditional festival, houses, businesses, and public places are decorated with candles and small oil lamps."
A special presentation is performed during the event to honor the occasion. New York's DJ Ladla entertains the crowd with dance music through the night. HOI Secretary Koushik Chatterjee says delicious, Indian "street food" is available, plus desserts and beverages.
Proceeds benefit Heritage of India - Northeast Louisiana, which works with the community of families and individuals from India who reside in the region, and engages in cultural and charitable activities.
