NELA Gardeners present a seminar called "Today's Gardening Trends" at the West Monroe Convention Center Jan. 16.

The Northeast Louisiana Gardeners is hosting its sixth annual gardening seminar called "Today's Gardening Trends" at the West Monroe Convention Center on Saturday, Jan. 16.

The seminar features 3 guest speakers, including keynote speaker Norman Winter. Winter is author of 4 books, the latest being "Captivating Combinations - Color and Style in the Garden."

He says he knows this time of year can be particularly difficult for gardening and looks forward to sharing some easy-to-follow tips.

"We can have beautiful flowers in the winter that will dazzle the landscape but if you want to harvest plants like mustard greens, that's possible as well," says Winter, UGA's Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens at the Historic Bamboo Farm.

Kerry Heafner says inviting well-known speakers like Winter and other local guests is helpful to gardeners in the area, since gardening seems to be becoming a more popular trend.

"I'm seeing more backyard gardens than I did just a few years ago and that's very encouraging," says Heafner, extension agent with the LSU Ag Center.

The NELA Gardeners seminar, "Today's Gardening Trends," is taking place at the West Monroe Convention Center on Saturday, Jan. 16. It begins at 7:30 a.m. and will end with a door prize drawing at 12 p.m.

Walk-ins are welcome, but pre-registration is preferred. Call the Northeast Louisiana Gardeners at 318 - 323- 2251 to register.
