Riding the Monroe Transit bus will cost more in the coming months, but not as much as was anticipated. A fifty percent increase in fares was proposed at Tuesday's Monroe city council meeting. The council instead decided on a twenty five percent increase.
Elderly, students and disabled riders will not have to pay more for their trips.
Monroe Mayor Jaime Mayo wanted fifty percent increase but said the increase of twenty five percent is still a positive step that could help in filling the nearly four million dollar projected budget deficit for next year.
The prices for riding the monorail transit system will go up at the beginning of 2018.
