The University of Louisiana Monroe Gerontology Program is presenting a lecture series on the many facets of aging.
The Gerontology Lecture series begins Tuesday, February 6 at 2 in Hemphill Hall Room 134. The series brings experts in the field of gerontology in to discuss topics related to aging. The February lectures are Elder Abuse & Neglect and Living with Alzheimer's Disease. "Elder abuse and neglect are far more common than you think," says Dr. Anita Sharma, the ULM Gerontology Program Coordinator and host of Life Transitions. The lecture series also talks about housing for the elderly. "All of us want to feel comfortable and stay in our homes, but sometimes it becomes difficult because while our minds cooperate, our body may not."
"Discover Gerontology" is a round-table event occurring Tuesday, March 6 in the Student Union Building Ballrooms A, B, and D. The event is aimed towards students and young people to educate them on opportunities available in the field of gerontology. Local agencies geared towards serving the elderly will have booths set up with information about volunteer work, internships, and job opportunities. There will be a keynote speaker, and afterward begins the round-table portion of the event. Students make their way around to table displays focused on specific aspects of aging.
Gerontology is the study of "what goes into becoming an older person." In gerontology, researchers look at the social, emotional, cognitive, socioeconomic, and environmental aspects that factor into the aging process. The ULM Gerontology program is offering a lecture series on gerontology in order to help grow the public knowledge and understanding of aging. "Life is all about change," says Dr. Sharma. "We go from stage to stage, and each stage brings its own pros and cons, as well as its own excitement."
