The 2018 Women's Symposium at the University of Louisiana Monroe will be held on March 28, 2018 at 12 p.m. A networking social begins at 5:30 p.m. for graduating students and potential employers.
Symposium committee member and Instructor for the School of Humanities Vanelis Rivera said, "We are seeking to empower, motivate, and encourage girls and women from all backgrounds and all educational and professional levels to pursue their passions and seek leadership roles in their desired career paths."
The symposium is being advertised as a women's event, but men are welcome to attend and take advantage of symposium presentations and networking opportunities. One of the events highest awards, the Vanguard Award, is even going to a man this year.
The events this year all revolve around one of three core "tracks." These include personal growth, professional development, and cultural awareness.
Several prominent Monroe women are scheduled to appear and give presentations. The keynote speaker this year, Meryl Kennedy Farr, is the CEO of Neighbors, LLC. and a prime example of a prominent female taking a leadership role.
One of the main functions of the Women's Symposium is to put college students into contact with potential employers and, especially, mentors. Symposium committee student member Kandace Moss sees the value of sharing knowledge with experienced professionals. "They can help you get into your career and potentially get jobs. It's really good networking," Moss said.
Tickets are available from the ULM website. Registration is free to currently enrolled students, and tickets cost $20 for faculty and $35 for the general public. "We really encourage all members of the community to come on out," Rivera said.
