The state's Community & Technical College System leaders are optimistic about the impact of a proposed two-year tuition-free plan heralded by President Obama in Tuesday night's State Of The Union. Louisiana Community & Technical College System President Dr. Monty Sullivan says more people earning a college education is a positive.
"Those earning a diploma can strengthen our economy and workforce," Sullivan said. The program is estimated to be about $60 billion over ten years.
Louisiana Delta Community College Chancellor Dr. Barbara Hanson is interested to see just how a universal plan looks. The president described how legislators in Tennessee have developed the concept there, and it could serve as a blueprint for a national program. "How they work through all the financial considerations, the terms of state allocation, that will be interesting to watch as the conversation unfolds," says Hanson.
Details of the proposal are expected to be released next month.
