Student Media Bring Awards from the Big Apple

ULM

Students from the University of Louisiana at Monroe received three awards from the College Media Association. The Davis L. Adams Apple Awards were announced Saturday, March 14 at CMA's annual conference in New York City.

91X KXUL, ULM's student-run radio station, won first place in Best Radio Promo. Hawk-E, ULM's online video journal produced by The Hawkeye, ULM's student newspaper, received a second place award in Best TV Newscast. The Hawkeye received third place in Best Newspaper for a four-year institution with five to ten thousand students.

"This was one of our more daring issues for the semester." said Ashley Lyons, editor-in-chief for The Hawkeye, of the issue that received the award. "All of the editors tried something new, design-wise."

Communication major Tyler Smith, produced a promotion piece for KXUL Student Radio that highlighted the MLK Day of Service. "This year's Day of Service collected winter clothes for the WellSpring in Monroe. 91X was glad to be a part, and invited our audience to join us."

Carmen Blackwell, a junior from Destrehan, Louisiana, hosted the video that highlighted "Skate for Change," a fundraiser for the homeless in Ouachita Parish. "I was so interested in the Homeless Foundation and how it works. It was great to learn about the students who were delivering non-perishable goods to the homeless and raising money for a good cause."

The College Media Association consists of the people who advise the nation’s collegiate media newspapers, yearbooks, magazines, broadcast and electronic media and their staffs — from coast to coast.

A national volunteer network of advisers, working with CMA’s associate executive director, coordinates hundreds of educational sessions including spring and fall conventions, summer workshops and other educational events.

CMA members maintain strong lines of communication through print and electronic media. CMA’s website and social media outlets inform members and collegiate media staffs of trends and news. College Media Review is a leading academic journal on collegiate media. The CMA listserv gives members the opportunity to gain quick advice from colleagues and discuss breaking news and issues affecting collegiate media.
