Monroe Symphony League to host Summer Book Fair

The Monroe Symphony League will host its summer book fair June 1, 2, 7, and 8, on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Book Room at 320 North Fourth Street in Monroe.

The first day of the fair a $2 fee will be charged to adults, but every other day is free to all patrons.

The Monroe Symphony League is a separate non-profit organization that functions to promote the cause of good music and music education. The League was founded in 1972 by five women who felt that such an organization was needed to enhance the activities of the Monroe Symphony Orchestra.

Shelves are full of gently used hardbacks, paperbacks, fiction and non-fiction materials. Books comprise of a large selection of suspense, religion, biographies, cookbooks, humor, and self-help novels, most of which are priced under $2. In addition, patrons can find magazines, DVD's, CD's, vinyl records, sheet music, and a variety of household items.

Mark Henderson from the Symphony League explains that one of the types of books patrons will be able to find is coffee table books, some even written and signed by Louisiana authors.

"Today the average price of a new coffee table book is $30-$40. But when it comes to acquiring a coffee table book from the Monroe Symphony League," Henderson says, "the most you will pay is $5, but most of the time they will be $1 to 3 dollars."

All proceeds from the event will go in support of the 2025 Marjorie Stricklin Emerging Artists Competition.
