(Monroe, LA) - The City of Monroe announces the renewal of the 1% Capital Infrastructure Sales Tax, an essential source of funding for maintaining and improving the city’s vital infrastructure. Originally approved in 1994 to support street projects, the tax was expanded in 2001 to include a wide range of infrastructure needs, such as streets, sewers, drainage systems, waterworks, bridges, police and fire stations, and other public facilities. The renewed tax is expected to generate approximately $18.8 million annually, ensuring continued progress for years to come.
Mayor Friday Ellis shared his gratitude for the community’s support, “I want to express my heartfelt thanks to everyone who took the time to vote in this important election. The renewal of the 1% sales tax is truly a victory for the voices of Monroe voters — a testament to the power of our community coming together to support the future of our city.
This decision reflects the commitment of Monroe’s citizens and businesses to move forward with thoughtful, long-term planning for our infrastructure needs while ensuring the efficient use of sales tax dollars. I’m grateful that so many voters took the time to understand the truth about the renewal and its purpose.
As your Mayor, I remain dedicated to representing all Monroe voters fairly, regardless of where they live within our city, and to championing initiatives that improve our quality of life. Together, we will continue building a safe, vibrant, and prosperous Monroe for the next generation.”
