MONROE, LA – United Way of Northeast Louisiana, in partnership with the Northeast Louisiana Bar Foundation, proudly announces the launch of The Heirship Project Part II: Wills & Deeds, a continuation of the impactful initiative designed to help local families
navigate heirship challenges.
This new phase of The Heirship Project will focus on wills and property deeds, providing residents with the legal tools and knowledge necessary to protect their assets, prevent future property disputes, and secure their family's financial future.
Two free community workshops will be held:
• Thursday, April 10, 2025 | 6:00 – 7:30 PM | United Way NELA (1201 Hudson Lane, Monroe, LA)
Thursday, June 5, 2025 | 6:00 – 7:30 PM | United Way NELA (1201 Hudson Lane, Monroe, LA)
Both workshops will be offered in person and via Zoom to ensure accessibility.
Through this partnership, the Northeast Louisiana Bar Foundation will provide free legal consultations and guidance for participants, offering support on heirship matters without the burden of legal fees. Attorneys participating in the Bar Foundation’s Pro Bono Project will receive specialized training and Continuing Legal Education (CLE) credit for their involvement in these sessions. Additionally, they will be encouraged to offer ongoing pro bono assistance through the Foundation’s monthly “Ask a Lawyer” Clinic.
Why This Matters
Many families in Northeast Louisiana face significant challenges in securing property ownership due to the lack of clear wills and deeds. Without proper legal documentation, generational property can become tangled in legal disputes, leading to financial instability and community displacement. This initiative seeks to remove barriers to legal assistance and equip residents with the knowledge to protect their family’s legacy.
