A recent LSU Public Policy Polling survey shows the state overwhelmingly supports the film industry in Louisiana, but mixed feelings about the film tax credits to lure companies to film here.
When asked if having movies made in Louisiana is good for the economy, 80% of those polled agreed. But, when questioned about the state's film tax credit program, only 48% of respondents supported the deal.
Baton Rouge-based Celtic Studios Executive Director Patrick Mulhearn believes residents see the impact of the movie industry. "People are seeing the jobs here. About 1 out of 10 people are in the industry or know someone who has worked with film project," said Mulhearn.
Lawmakers will likely review proposals on restructuring the film tax credit program this session as the state faces a $1.6 billion deficit. Mulhearn says both sides can work together on the issue. "We all know there's a bad budget. I think the industry may be willing to give a little. We all want to see this for the long term," he said.
