The LHSAA Annual Convention convenes today and on Friday, high school principals will vote on a number of proposals. A vote will NOT be taken on whether to end the split playoff in football. But North Vermilion Principal Tommy Byler has a proposal to even up the number of schools that play each classification in an effort to prevent one or two win teams from making the playoffs on the non-select side.
Separate brackets for public and private schools went into effect with the 2013 football season. The number of championship games went from five to nine. Many are not happy with the split, but Byler says the split is not going away, so he’s just trying to make it better by not having one and two-win teams make the playoffs.
There is a proposal on Friday to end the playoff split in basketball, baseball and softball. Byler says as a member of the executive committee, he made the proposal on behalf of basketball coaches around the state.
