Biden-Harris Administration Announces $10M in Infrastructure Grants for Louisiana

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg announced $10 million for three projects in Louisiana, part of $1.8 billion in awards from the Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) discretionary grant program.

“After decades of underinvestment, the condition of America’s infrastructure is now finally getting better instead of worse – and today we proudly announce our support for 148 more projects in communities of every size across the country,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. “Through President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, we’re funding projects across the country to make roads safer, make it easier for people to move around their community, make transportation infrastructure more resilient to extreme weather, and improve supply chains to keep costs down for consumers.”

Funding is equally split between urban and rural areas with a large percentage of grants supporting regions defined as historically disadvantaged of persistent poverty.

Projects in Louisiana announced today include:

  • $328,000 for the Lower LA Hwy 1 Resiliency Plan in Lafourche Parish – The project will fund the development of a comprehensive resiliency plan for approximately 7-miles of LA Hwy 1 along the Gulf of Mexico from Port Fourchon to the parish border at Thunder Bayou. The plan will identify the locations of high-risk pedestrian areas and prioritize safety improvements such as pedestrian pathways and protective barriers in the underserved communities within the project area. The approach will incorporate nature-based solutions and innovative hardening approaches to enhance durability and reduce the need for scheduled maintenance.
  • $2,450,000 for the Bayou Patassat Green Corridor Project - Phase II in Slidell – The project will include planning, feasibility, and design activities. This project will ultimately design an interconnected network of facilities within four study areas of the Olde Towne Slidell Waterfront Masterplan. These include ADA accessible sidewalks/crosswalks, new bicycle and pedestrian paths, a boardwalk design along Bayou Bonfouca, consolidated parking along the corridor, waterway transport options, and micro-transit options that will protect non-motorized travelers from safety risks.
  • $7,363,098 for the Peters Road Bridge and Extension - Phase III in Plaquemines and Jefferson Parishes – The project will fund the preliminary design activities including Environmental Assessment and right-of-way mapping for Peters Road Bridge and Extension, Phase III. The project to be planned will extend Peters Road from the southern boundary line of Jefferson Parish south to LA 23 in Plaquemines Parish and includes a new bridge over the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway. The proposed bridge and road extension to be planned are expected to reduce crashes related to traffic congestion and serve as an additional emergency response route. In addition, the project addresses climate change by incorporating the 2023 Coastal Master Plan in the design.
