Gulf of Mexico Renamed to Gulf of America, February 9 Declared Gulf of America Day

U.S. Capitol
Cory Crowe

President Donald J. Trump has officially renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America through Executive Order 14172, as part of efforts to restore American pride.

The renaming affects the U.S. Continental Shelf area bordered by Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida, extending to the seaward boundary with Mexico and Cuba.

February 9, 2025, has been proclaimed as the first Gulf of America Day, encouraging public officials and citizens to observe the day with programs, ceremonies, and activities.

Louisiana, as part of the northeastern, northern, and northwestern boundary of the Gulf, is directly impacted by this change, which may influence its coastal identity and industries reliant on the Gulf.

The proclamation emphasizes the historical significance of the Gulf to the United States and aims to foster national unity and pride.
