Zoe Sissac and Alana Pellegrin, representatives of ULM Student Publications, discuss the daily operations of student writing and editing at the University of Louisiana Monroe. They explore the workings of The ULM Hawkeye, a student-run newspaper, and the Chacahoula, ULM's yearbook.
Zoe Sissac, Editor-in-Chief of The Hawkeye, actively seeks out prominent local, state, and national news, finding ways to connect these stories back to the student body.
Alana Pellegrin, Editor-in-Chief of the Chacahoula, dedicates much of her academic year to compiling the yearbook. At the end of the 2023 school year, Pellegrin embarked on an innovative project as the Chacahoula transitioned to a digital and interactive format, featuring links and videos.
The Hawkeye continues to be offered in print while also providing online access. This dual format allows for live updates as stories develop, helping to keep students informed in real time.
When asked about the value of Student Publications at ULM, Sissac stated, "I think we have a big responsibility in holding our students, administration, and faculty accountable..." as well as shedding light on student organizations that may have gone unrecognized in years past.
Currently, the Office of Student Publications comprises 15 student writers and editors, along with one faculty advisor, Whitney Martin. Upholding a tradition of excellence, The Hawkeye recently earned third place as the best college newspaper in the South, continuing to serve as a trusted voice on campus.
