United Way of Northeast Louisiana announces The Heirship Project Part II

United way of Northeast Louisiana, in partnership with the Northeast Louisiana Bar foundation, announce The Heirship Project Part II: Wills and Deeds. The project consists of free workshops for the community, with complimentary legal assistance regarding heirship subjects.

The project will focus on providing residents with the tools and knowledge to protect their assets, prevent property disputes, and secure their family's financial future.

The Northeast Louisiana Bar Foundation will provide free legal consultations and guidance for participants. Attorneys participating in these sessions receive specialized training and CLE credit.

Michelle Saucer, the community impact director at the United Way of Northeast Louisiana, talks about why this project got started and want she wants people to take from it.

After the local storms in 2020, Saucer says, "we found that many people did not have clear title to their property." United Way assisted many people in repairing their homes, and this led to wanting to educate the community on protecting their property.

When talking about want she wants people to take from the event, she hopes that people "will be educated on the difference between a will and deed... I hope that they will execute one for them and their families."

The first community workshop will be held on Thursday, April 10, with the second workshop taking place on Thursday, June 5. The workshops will be from 6-7:30pm. All participants must register online.

The workshops will be at United Way NELA, 1201 Hudson Lane, Monroe, LA. They will also be available on Zoom if you are unable to make it to the physical location.
