State Senate President John Alario isn't mincing words over the looming budget crisis for state legislators. The Jindal administration has discussed a potential $200 to $300 million cut for higher education.
"I've heard it could be closer to $380 million," Alario said recently. The higher figure may occur if oil
prices continue to run at lower than expected levels. The weaker revenues would likely grow a $1.4 billion shortfall already targeted for the state's 2015-16 budget.
Describing a worst case scenario, Alario feels the crisis could force as many as 16 campuses across the state to close. He says all options are open, including a tax hike to help increase revenue. However, he adds, "Governor Jindal has been steadfast against tax increases."
