Former Governor Edwin Edwards was placed under hospice care earlier this week, leading speculation as to the status of his health. The 93 year old life-long Democrat has been in and out of hospital over the past year. But the former Governor has told the media that he is doing well and nowhere close to imminent death. His wife Trina Edwards spoke on Baton Rouge Public Radio WRKF’s program “Talk Louisiana” and she explained the reasons behind her husband’s hospice care.
"He was not feeling well when we took him to the emergency room, it was just a really difficult process to get him there and back," Mrs. Edwards explained. "Our doctor suggested hospice because it would be easier to treat him at home and it would also give me help when I need help to get him up for bathing and things like that."
The former Governor has required the assistance of a wheelchair to get around of late which had also factored in the decision to receive hospice care at home. Edwin Edwards is the only Louisiana governor to have served four terms. When it was announced that former Louisiana Governor Edwin Edwards was placed under hospice care this week, speculation about his health became major news.
