"Hey, Read this!" is a discussion series presented by the Masur Museum of Art and hosted by the Upstairs Gallery. Every season, Benjamin M. Hickey, Curator of Collections & Exhibitions or a leader in the Monroe arts community will assign a handful of art historical or critical theory readings. All are welcome to convene at the Upstairs Gallery for discussion. November’s event will look at the historical roots of modern art history. Specifically, we will read excerpts from Giorgio Vasari’s The Lives of the Most Excellent Painters, Sculptors, and Architects including the introduction, preface, and the entry about Titian (p.489). We will also read an excerpt from Winckelmann: Writings on Art (Selected & Edited by David Irwin). Reading the introduction is recommended. We will discuss Essay on the Beautiful in Art (p. 89) and History of Ancient Art (p. 104).
