Kleckley Vows Fight Over Deep Cuts To Higher Ed

Louisiana House Speaker Rep. Chuck Kleckley plans to fight any plan that would significantly reduce higher education funding in the spring legislative session. 

Last week, a spokesperson for Gov. Bobby Jindal stated the administration was looking at a cut of $200 to $300 million for state colleges and universities.  "That would not set higher ed back by years, but, by generations," said Kleckley.  Jindal's staff is considering ways to reduce state spending as a result of an anticipated $1.4 billion shortfall.  A reduction would occur in the fiscal year budget starting July 1.   

Intake Site Sought For Area Homeless

The plight of the homeless is an issue where some local organizations want to make a difference in the new year.  Continuum of Care Coalition's Sarah Johnson says she's hopeful of developing a centralized intake site in Monroe.

The Louisiana Department of Insurance has enhanced it's online tool to help consumers find a better rate for homeowner and automobile coverage.

"You can enter more specific information about yourself and miles you drive, and other things that set rates," Donelon said.  The upgrades include streamlined online services and a responsive design that makes the site compatible with mobile devices.  He says policy holders should be aware that scenarios presented in rate comparisons are for illustrative purposes and are not designed to match exact circumstances.

Residents are urged to prepare for an arctic front moving into north Louisiana today.  A hard freeze is expected early this evening through Thursday morning.

Governor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness Director Kevin Davis says precautions should be taken in advance of the cold snap.  "Make sure pets and plants are protected from the weather, cover or wrap exposed pipes to insulate from sub-freezing temperatures" Davis said.

Jindal Meets With Iowa Conservative Groups

Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal meets with conservative religious leaders in Iowa today.  The possible 2016 presidential candidate is looking to shore up support among this group of voters.  According to the Des Moines Register, one meeting is scheduled for Cedar Rapids, the other in Des Moines.
