DA Cannizzaro Recall Drive Begins

A coalition of community groups is leading a petition drive to recall New Orleans District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro.

It stems from the office sending out documents that look like subpoenas – but aren’t signed by a judge – to victims and witnesses. Cannizzaro says those are no longer being used, but several speakers at a rally outside the criminal court building says those so-called “fake subpoenas” are reason enough to justify a recall.

Organizer Michelle Hanks is co-founder of Our Revolution NOLA:

“The aggression, intimidation and heavy-handedness of this D.A. is past just being unacceptable. We are done with those in power who refuse to listen to the needs and the concerns of the people who live here,” she said.

The recall effort is on move-on-dot-org. Rally speakers also called for disciplining prosecutors who sent out the “fake subpoenas.
