Nelson Eager To Share Love of Stage, Service As Miss Louisiana

Newly crowned Miss Louisiana 2015 April Nelson fondly looks back at her upbringing in southern Louisiana, her love for theatre, and her passion for giving back.

Nelson is no stranger to bright lights and a big stage. She has loved the stage since she was a child. Nelson was in one of her first performances at Playmakers Theatre in Covington, LA.

"I was Baby June in Gypsy with the ringlet curls and I tapped around and sang 'Let Me Entertain You'. That was my first musical. Ever since then I've been obsessed with it."

Nelson graduated from  Oklahoma City University with a degree in Musical Theatre.

Her passion for theatre is shared with volunteer work. Nelson's personal experiences with giving back inspired her platform , "IOU, Improving Others Through U".  IOU is an initiative to inspire everyone to be active in the surrounding community. Nelson began the IOU initiative while serving as Miss Crescent City New Orleans.

"It's all about creating a sense of belonging in a community. Making sure that whether you're 2 or 82 that you have the opportunities to volunteer and you know you have the opportunities to volunteer," Nelson says.
