ULM and LDCC Partner for MLK Day of Service

Jan 12, 2018

Some members of Louisiana Delta Community College and the University of Louisiana at Monroe will be taking the day on, not off, on January 15, 2018. In 1994, Congress passed the King Holiday and Service Act, designating the Martin Luther King, Jr. Federal Holiday as a national day of service and charged the Corporation for National and Community Service with leading this effort.

MLK Day of Service is recognized as the third Monday in January and holds the distinction of being the only federal holiday observed as a national day of service. Dr. Pamela Saulsberry, Director of the School of Behavioral & Social Sciences at ULM, and Alvina Thomas, Dean of Student Success Services at Louisiana Delta Community College, have combined forces to benefit a local charity for the last seven years. This year, Day Shelter located 807 Desiard Street in Monroe is the recipient.

The shelter provides hot meals, laundry services, and assistance for the homeless and less fortunate in our community. The shelter provides overnight stays for those individuals and/or families in need of a safe place to sleep.

Saulsberry and Thomas are asking all faculty, staff, students, and community partners to join ULM & LDCC in this initiative and donate the requested items by Monday, January 15th. Prior to Monday January 15th, the requested items can be delivered to Strauss Hall Room 208 on the campus of ULM or to Student Services, Suite 144 on the Monroe campus of Louisiana Delta Community College.

On the MLK Day of Service, January 15th, individuals can bring their items and volunteer their services by assisting with the packaging and delivery of items on the Monroe campus of LDCC, 7500 Millhaven Road, Conference Center A and B from 9:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.

Items Needed:

Nonperishable food items, paper towels, hand sanitizer, tooth paste, soap, baby wipes, deodorant, band-aides/cotton swabs, Neosporin, razors, feminine hygiene products, paper towels
